Innovative Hospital-Based Pediatric Virtual Learning for Nursing Students.

Background:

• Prelicensure nursing education faces challenges with limited access to specialty clinical sites, particularly in pediatrics.
• A significant knowledge gap exists in pediatric clinical skills for nursing students.

Purpose of the Study:

• To develop and evaluate a virtual learning series to enhance pediatric clinical knowledge and skills for prelicensure nursing students.
• To offer flexible learning options addressing the scarcity of pediatric clinical placements.

• The Pediatric Virtual Clinical Learning Series (PVCLS) was created, featuring four virtual modules on pediatric documentation, rapid response, code blue, and a pediatric case.
• Modules were delivered initially as synchronous virtual classes and later as asynchronous content on an e-learning platform.
• Target audience included nursing students and faculty from affiliated institutions.

Main Results:

• 185 nursing students and faculty participated in synchronous and asynchronous PVCLS sessions.
• Student satisfaction with synchronous sessions ranged from 4.02 to 4.56 out of 5.
• Student satisfaction with asynchronous sessions ranged from 3.41 to 3.58 out of 4.

Conclusions:

• The PVCLS effectively provided both synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning opportunities.
• This initiative helped bridge the knowledge gap in pediatric nursing education.
