    Summary

    Human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) efficiently support lymphocyte proliferation in response to PHA, acting as accessory cells. However, these PMNs do not appear to present antigens, suggesting a distinct role in immune responses.

    Background:

    • Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) are key immune cells.
    • Their role in adaptive immune responses, particularly antigen presentation, is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the capacity of human PMNs to act as antigen-presenting cells (APCs) or accessory cells.
    • To determine the role of PMNs in purified protein derivative (PPD)-specific and phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-induced lymphocyte responses.

    • Purification of PMNs from PPD-immune individuals.
    • Assaying PMN function as APCs for PPD and as accessory cells in PHA-stimulated autologous lymphocyte cultures.
