Professional Values

8.7K
Nurses are responsible for caring for patients during birth, death, illness, and healing. Professional values guide the decisions and actions that nurses make in their careers. If nurses know the decisions and actions to take, providing patients with exceptional care is possible.
The values that are the foundation of the nursing profession are altruism, autonomy, human dignity, and social justice.
First, altruism refers to the concern for the welfare and well-being of others without personal...

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Military Health
  • Veteran Care

Background:

  • Civilian nurses may lack knowledge for culturally sensitive veteran care.
  • Inadequate prelicensure education may explain this knowledge gap.
  • Increasing numbers of veterans utilize civilian healthcare services.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the adequacy of military/veteran content in prelicensure nursing textbooks.
  • To identify gaps in nursing education regarding veteran-specific health needs.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative, descriptive study design.
  • Analysis and rating of 32 keywords across eight content areas.
  • Evaluation of 24 nursing textbooks.

Main Results:

  • Keywords related to military/veteran issues were present but often lacked context.
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder received the highest mean rating.
  • Psychiatric/mental health was the highest-rated content area.

Conclusions:

  • Limited textbook resources necessitate deliberate inclusion of veteran content by nurse faculty.
  • Findings are relevant for curricular design and revision in competency-based nursing education.
  • Addressing these gaps is crucial for preparing nurses to care for the veteran population.
