Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II01:18

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

1.8K
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results...

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

13.7K
Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...

A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Health Literacy01:21

Health Literacy

4.4K
Health literacy is an individual's or a community's capacity to comprehend, receive, read, and use relevant healthcare information and services. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2018) defines health literacy as the cognitive and social skills that determine the ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health. As a result, the WHO helps individuals manage long-term health concerns, participate in preventative...

Community Based Intervention

108
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings I: Donning

1.3K
Donning PPE must be completed before contact with the patient. This process protects from infectious agents. The sequence and action included in each donning are critical, and the steps must be systematic to avoid exposure to pathogens. The institutional policy also needs to be followed while donning PPE. The pre-donning preparations are gathering equipment, inspecting the PPE equipment for tears, holes, or damage, removing jewelry, removing any garments below the elbows, and tying the hair...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Health Promotion
  • Community Health Education

Background:

  • Physical activity is crucial for a healthy life, with public health sectors playing a key role in dissemination.
  • Cooperative Extension agents are vital public health workers for community-level physical activity initiatives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To enhance Cooperative Extension agents' competencies in selecting, delivering, and evaluating physical activity programs.
  • To achieve this through a theory-based, online training intervention.

Main Methods:

  • A 9-week online training program was delivered via video conferencing to 130 Cooperative Extension agents from two states.
  • Participants completed weekly sessions, competency checks, and assignments.
  • Pre- and post-program surveys assessed physical activity competencies, flourishing, and personal physical activity status.

Main Results:

  • Significant increases in physical activity in public health competency (p < 0.00) were observed.
  • Agents' personal physical activity levels also significantly increased (p < 0.05).
  • While not statistically significant, flourishing scores trended towards improvement (p = 0.09).

Conclusions:

  • The online, competency-based training effectively improved Cooperative Extension agents' knowledge of physical activity guidelines and program implementation.
  • The program demonstrates a successful model for enhancing public health workforce capacity in physical activity promotion.
  • Further research should explore the scalability of this online training model for wider dissemination.
