1University Psychiatric Clinics, University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland.
Individuals with exercise addiction frequently experience other psychiatric disorders, particularly depression and personality disorders. Higher numbers of co-occurring disorders correlate with increased exercise addiction severity, highlighting the need for clinical assessment and treatment.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Behavioral Science
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Exercise addiction lacks formal DSM-5 classification due to insufficient research.
- Comorbid psychiatric conditions in exercise addiction are understudied.
Purpose of the Study:
- To clinically assess individuals with potential exercise addiction.
- To identify the profile of co-occurring psychiatric disorders in this population.
Main Methods:
- Recruited 156 individuals exercising >10h/week, continuing despite harm.
- Administered the Exercise Dependence Scale, Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 (SCID-5-CV, SCID-5-PD), and a DSM-5 non-substance-related addictive disorders interview.
Main Results:
- 75% of participants met criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder.
- Most common diagnoses included depressive disorders (56.3%), personality disorders (46.9%), and obsessive-compulsive disorders (31.3%).
- A significant positive correlation (r=0.549, p=0.002) was found between the number of psychiatric disorders and exercise addiction severity.
Conclusions:
- Exercise addiction is frequently comorbid with various psychiatric disorders.
- Obsessive-compulsive personality traits (Cluster C) are more prevalent than impulsive traits (Cluster B).
- Clinical diagnostics and targeted treatment strategies for exercise addiction are essential, requiring further research into its natural history.
