  • A scarcity of willing preceptors impedes NP program graduations.
  • Factors influencing NPs' decisions not to precept are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify factors associated with NPs' current, past, or never precepting status.
  • Utilized the Integrated Behavioral Model as the conceptual framework.
  • Investigated personal, primary, and external determinants of precepting intent.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional, comparative, descriptive study employing survey methodology.
  • Survey items adapted from published instruments to align with the conceptual framework.
  • Data analyzed using bivariate and stepwise multinomial logistic regression.

  • 261 NP responses were obtained.
  • Personal factors (experience, hours worked) and primary determinants (peer support, recognition, expertise) predicted precepting status.

  • Distinct factors predict current, previous, and never precepting among NPs.
  • Request frequency influenced both non-precepting groups.
  • Clinical setting support and program factors differentiated non-precepting groups.
