    Summary

A new optical performance monitoring (OPM) method uses Fourier transform spectrum analysis (FTSA) for simultaneous OSNR monitoring and signal recognition. This technique accurately identifies modulation formats and baud rates, even with fiber nonlinearities.

    Area of Science:

    • Optical Communications
    • Signal Processing
    • Metrology

    Background:

    • Accurate optical performance monitoring (OPM) is crucial for modern communication networks.
    • Existing methods struggle with fiber nonlinearities and require network configuration knowledge.
    • Simultaneous monitoring of multiple parameters like OSNR, modulation format, and baud rate is challenging.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a novel OPM method for simultaneous monitoring of OSNR, modulation format, and baud rate.
    • To address challenges posed by fiber nonlinearities and eliminate the need for prior network configuration knowledge.
    • To enable integration and miniaturization for application in smart optical networks.

    Main Methods:

    • Fourier Transform Spectrum Analysis (FTSA) using two-stage Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) arrays to obtain spectral features.
    • Neural networks to characterize the mapping between OPM parameters and modulated interference intensity (MII).
    • Testing under complex transmission conditions including frequency offset and delay jitter.

    Main Results:

    • Simultaneous monitoring of optical performance parameters achieved.
    • High accuracy in modulation format (94.8%) and baud rate recognition.
    • Over 86% of OSNR monitoring errors were within ±1 dB.
    • The FTSA is manufacturable on Silicon on Insulator (SOI) with broad bandwidth.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed FTSA-based OPM method offers simultaneous, accurate performance monitoring.
    • It effectively handles fiber nonlinearities and complex transmission conditions.
    • The method's compatibility with SOI fabrication and broad bandwidth supports integration for smart optical networks.
