Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

483
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

13.3K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia

216
Schizophrenia, a complex psychiatric disorder, has been historically misunderstood. Early psychological theories attributed its origins to childhood trauma and unresponsive parenting. However, contemporary research largely rejects these notions, favoring the vulnerability-stress hypothesis. This model proposes that individuals with a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may develop the disorder following exposure to significant environmental stressors. Notably, studies on high-risk...

Schizophrenia01:17

Schizophrenia

266
Schizophrenia, a term introduced by Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler in 1911, describes a severe psychological disorder marked by profound disruptions in attention, thought processes, language, emotion, and interpersonal relationships. The core feature of schizophrenia is psychosis — a state characterized by a fundamental detachment from reality. This disconnection manifests through distorted logic, impaired perception, and atypical behavior, severely affecting the lives of those...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Psychometric Assessment

Background:

  • Current clinical assessment tools for schizophrenia and psychotic disorders are time-consuming.
  • There is a need for brief, comprehensive, and user-friendly scales for routine practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a concise scale for assessing schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
  • To evaluate the psychometric properties of this new scale.

Main Methods:

  • A 14-item scale was created, incorporating items from the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and adding questions on obsessions and memory.
  • The scale was administered to 120 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
  • Psychometric properties including construct validity (exploratory factor analysis), concurrent validity (correlations with PANSS, CGI-S, GAF), criterion validity, internal consistency, and interrater reliability were assessed.

Main Results:

  • The scale demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.89) and strong interrater reliability (ICC = 0.89).
  • Exploratory factor analysis identified a 4-factor structure (psychosis, negative/cognitive impairment, emotional distress, disorganization) explaining 74.47% of the variance.
  • Significant correlations were found with established measures (PANSS, CGI-S, GAF), and the scale showed high sensitivity to psychopathology changes (Cohen's d = 2.68).

Conclusions:

  • The developed 14-item scale exhibits robust psychometric properties.
  • Its reliability, validity, and dimensionality support its application in routine clinical settings for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder assessment.
