Summary

Transanal irrigation (TAI) effectively treats neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, particularly those with moderate NBD. TAI also improved urinary voiding symptoms, highlighting the link between bowel and bladder function in MS.

Background:

  • Neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) affects 68% of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
  • Transanal irrigation (TAI) is a key therapeutic option for managing NBD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of TAI in improving NBD in patients with multiple sclerosis.
  • To assess the impact of TAI on urinary symptoms in MS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study including 28 MS patients undergoing TAI.
  • Data collected included NBD scores, Urinary Symptom Profile (USP) scores, and demographic/clinical characteristics.
  • Patients were categorized into four NBD severity groups: very minor, minor, moderate, and severe.

  • TAI showed significant improvement in NBD scores, especially in patients with initially moderate NBD (75% improved).

  • TAI's positive effect on voiding dysfunction suggests a pelvic organ cross-talk, emphasizing the importance of treating bowel dysfunction in MS.
