Abstract:
When treating acute tibial shaft fractures, every attempt should be made to prevent malunion or nonunion of the tibia. When these complications occur, tibial osteotomy and intramedullary nailing is a functional treatment alternative when infection is not present. Treatment of an infected nonunion usually requires staged protocol using several surgical procedures to effect an acceptable outcome.
