Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Sociology
- Educational Technology
Background:
- Gender-based violence (GBV) poses a global public health challenge, particularly in rural and low-income settings due to entrenched patriarchal stereotypes.
- Traditional attitudes often reinforce negative perceptions of women, exacerbating the severity and persistence of GBV.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate "Tsiunas," an innovative videogame designed to increase awareness and understanding of gender-based violence.
- To assess the videogame's potential to transform attitudes and challenge beliefs supporting patriarchal societal models and unequal gender relations.
Main Methods:
- The study involved a two-phase evaluation of the "Tsiunas" videogame, assessing usability, stability, and impact on student perceptions.
- Surveys were employed in both phases to gather data on game acceptance, content appropriation, and changes in attitudes toward GBV and co-responsible masculinities.
Main Results:
- Students demonstrated high acceptance and engagement with the "Tsiunas" videogame's content and core message.
- The game successfully influenced participants' opinions on patriarchal norms, tolerance for violence against women, and overall attitudes toward GBV.
Conclusions:
- The "Tsiunas" videogame proved effective in challenging deeply ingrained patriarchal beliefs and reducing tolerance for gender-based violence.
- The study highlights the potential of digital games in promoting co-responsible masculinities and fostering positive shifts in attitudes regarding gender equality and violence prevention.
