Background:

Bullying is a form of violence impacting children's social and emotional development.
Understanding the neural underpinnings of emotional processing in bullying dynamics is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the emotional processing time course in children involved in bullying (victims, bullies, observers).
To investigate event-related potentials (ERPs), specifically early posterior negativity and late positive potential (LPP), during emotional picture viewing.

Main Methods:

Recorded high-density electroencephalograms (EEGs) in 45 children (8-12 years old).
Utilized a passive visualization task with positive, neutral, and negative social pictures from the International Affective Picture System.
Analyzed ERPs in different brain regions.

Main Results:

The victim group exhibited higher late positive potential (LPP) amplitudes, particularly in posterior and anterior regions.
In the central region, LPP was greater for neutral social pictures in bullying victims.
Victims showed a more intense response to emotional stimuli, both during and after presentation.

Conclusions:

Bullying victims display enhanced neural responses to emotional stimuli, suggesting hypervigilance.
This hypervigilance may impede emotional regulation in children affected by bullying.
Findings highlight distinct emotional processing patterns in bullying victims.
