Summary

Orthodontic retraction after four premolar extractions showed a mild trend of external root resorption (ERR) in anterior teeth, but changes were not clinically significant and below CBCT accuracy.

Background:

  • Anterior teeth are susceptible to ERR, especially after premolar extractions and retraction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Assess root morphology changes in maxillary canines and incisors.
  • Evaluate root changes after four premolar extraction and anterior teeth retraction using 3D models.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Cone Beam CT scans (T0 and T1) from six adult patients.
  • Constructed and superimposed 3D surface models to map root changes.
  • Analyzed root morphology in patients with bimaxillary protrusion undergoing premolar extraction and retraction.

Main Results:

  • Observed average root differences were near zero.
  • Extreme value changes were smaller than the Cone Beam CT accuracy.
  • No clinically significant root changes were detected.

Conclusions:

  • A mild trend of external root resorption was noted.
  • The observed resorption was not clinically significant.
  • Root changes were below the accuracy threshold of the CBCT technology.
