Summary

This study demonstrates that a flipped classroom approach significantly improves clinician confidence in conducting root cause analyses (RCAs). These improvements in patient safety knowledge are sustained long-term, particularly for residents and fellows.

  • To evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of a specific RCA training course.
  • To measure changes in knowledge and confidence regarding RCA participation.

  • A flipped classroom model combining pre-course work with an intensive 8.5-hour program.
  • Inclusion of didactic sessions and facilitator-led RCA simulations.
  • Pre- and post-course surveys with a 10-month follow-up to assess knowledge and comfort with RCAs.

  • Most participants (57%) had no prior RCA experience, and 87% had no prior training.
  • Post-course, participants reported significantly increased confidence in RCA participation (P<.001).
  • Sustained confidence was observed at 10 months (P<.001), especially among residents/fellows.

  • The implemented training course effectively improved participants' confidence in conducting RCAs.
  • The positive impact on confidence was sustained over a 10-month period.
  • Residents and fellows showed the most significant and lasting improvements in RCA participation confidence.
