Background:

The International Council of Nurses Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nurse Network (ICN NP/APNN) has monitored global advanced practice nurse (APN) development.
APNs include nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the global status of APN practice, focusing on scope of practice, education, regulation, and practice climate.
To identify gaps in APN role development for future recommendations.

Main Methods:

An online survey was developed and distributed to gather data on APN roles, education, regulation/credentialing, and practice climate.
The survey was launched at the 10th Annual ICN NP/APNN Conference and disseminated online over one year.

Main Results:

Data from 325 respondents across 26 countries were analyzed.
While educational advancements were noted, the global APN profession faces persistent challenges with titling, title protection, regulation, credentialing, and practice barriers.

Conclusions:

Advanced practice nurses (APNs) are crucial for achieving universal health coverage.
Recommendations are provided to facilitate APN role advancement and support global health goals.
