Summary

The Kane and Barrett Universal-II formulas offer the most accurate intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations for cataract surgery across all axial lengths. Kane excelled in long eyes, while Kane and EVO 2.0 were superior in short eyes.

Scanning Light Scattering Profiler SLPS Based Methodology to Quantitatively Evaluate Forward and Backward Light Scattering from Intraocular Lenses

Background:

Accurate refractive outcomes in cataract surgery depend heavily on biometry and intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formulas.
Newer IOL formulas aim to enhance the precision of post-operative refractive results.
This review evaluates the performance of new formulas under varying ocular biometric conditions, including short and long axial lengths.

Approach:

A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed and Cochrane databases (2016-2021).
51 relevant articles were selected from an initial pool of 483.
Fifteen new IOL formulas were identified, with 8 meeting eligibility criteria for comparison.

Key Points:

The eligible formulas (BUII, Hill-RBF 2.0, Kane, Pearl DGS, LSF AI, Naesar 2, EVO 2.0, VRF) were compared based on median absolute error, mean absolute error, and the percentage of eyes within 0.5D of the target refraction.
The Kane and Barrett Universal-II (BUII) formulas demonstrated superior performance across the entire axial length (AL) spectrum.
In specific subgroups, the Kane formula was most accurate for long eyes (AL > 26.0 mm), and both Kane and EVO 2.0 performed best for short eyes (AL < 22.0 mm).

Conclusions:

The Kane and Barrett Universal-II formulas are recommended for general use due to their consistent accuracy.
For eyes with specific axial lengths, the Kane formula (long eyes) and Kane/EVO 2.0 formulas (short eyes) offer enhanced precision.
Continued evaluation of IOL formulas is crucial for optimizing refractive outcomes in cataract surgery.
