Background:

Digital self-harm involves anonymously posting hurtful content about oneself online.
Research in this area is nascent, with limited understanding of its connection to suicidality.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between digital self-harm and suicidal ideation and attempts in adolescents.
To examine the relationship between two indicators of digital self-harm and past-year suicidality.

Main Methods:

Survey data collected in 2019 from 4972 US middle and high school students.
Logistic regression analysis used to assess the association between digital self-harm and suicidality indicators.

Main Results:

Digital self-harm engagement showed a 5-7 fold increase in the likelihood of suicidal thoughts.
Digital self-harm engagement showed a 9-15 fold increase in the likelihood of suicide attempts.

Conclusions:

A significant connection exists between digital self-harm and suicidality in youth.
Health professionals should screen for digital self-harm to address underlying mental health issues.
Parental support and open communication are vital for addressing root causes of digital self-harm.
