Background:

Geographic inequities in access to Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are documented.
Geographic access to Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), the primary frontline Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) providers, remains largely unexplored.
Understanding RBT distribution is crucial for addressing service gaps in ASD care.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine county-level geographic access to RBTs across the United States.
To analyze changes in RBT geographic distribution over time.
To compare RBT distribution relative to BCBAs and the prevalence of children with ASD.

Main Methods:

Analysis of county-level data across all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia (N = 3,138).
Examination of RBT distribution in relation to BCBA distribution.
Assessment of RBT distribution as a function of ASD prevalence.

Main Results:

County-level ASD/RBT ratios reveal a significant shortage of RBTs relative to the number of children with ASD.
