Bacterial Signaling01:30

Bacterial Signaling

33.8K
Bacterial signaling can occur within bacteria (intracellular) or between bacteria (intercellular). At times, a group of bacteria behaves like a community. To achieve this, they engage in quorum sensing, the perception of higher cell density that causes changes in gene expression. Quorum sensing involves both extracellular and intracellular signaling. The signaling cascade starts with a molecule called an autoinducer (AI). Individual bacteria produce AIs that move out of the bacterial cell...

Summary

Orthodontic miniscrew placement did not cause significant bacteremia in patients. Blood cultures remained negative for most participants, indicating a low risk of infection following the procedure.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Medicine
  • Orthodontics
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Miniscrews are widely used in orthodontic treatments.
  • Miniscrew placement can potentially lead to bacteremia, a concern for patients at risk of infective endocarditis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the occurrence of bacteremia following orthodontic miniscrew placement.
  • To evaluate the risk of bloodstream infection associated with this common orthodontic procedure.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental study involving 30 orthodontic patients undergoing miniscrew placement.
  • Blood samples were collected pre-placement and 30-60 seconds post-placement for aerobic and anaerobic cultures.
  • Samples were incubated for five days, and positive cultures were identified using standard biological methods. Data analyzed with the McNemar test.

Main Results:

  • Blood cultures were negative for bacteremia in 29 out of 30 patients both before and after miniscrew placement.
  • One patient showed transient bacteremia with aerobic and anaerobic bacteria post-placement, but initial samples were negative.

Conclusions:

  • Miniscrew placement in orthodontic patients is generally not associated with significant bacteremia.
  • The risk of developing bacteremia from orthodontic miniscrew insertion appears to be low.
