Summary

Accurate neutron spectra are crucial for calibrating reference fields. New calculations for a D2O moderated Californium-252 (²⁵²Cf) source at PTB, using MCNP6, show a 5% difference from prior PTB results and slight variations with ISO standards.

Area of Science:

  • Nuclear Physics
  • Radiation Dosimetry
  • Neutron Metrology

Background:

  • Neutron reference fields are essential for calibrating radiation detection equipment.
  • Accurate knowledge of neutron spectra and dosimetric parameters is vital for reliable calibration.
  • The Physikalisch-Technische Bundeanstalt (PTB) utilizes a D2O moderated ²⁵²Cf source assembly for generating a neutron reference field.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present new calculations of neutron spectra and dosimetric parameters for the PTB's D2O moderated ²⁵²Cf source assembly.
  • To compare these new calculations with previous PTB results and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 8529 moderator model.
  • To provide updated data based on recent ²⁵²Cf fission neutron spectrum data and ICRP 57 recommendations.

  • Detailed simulation of the ²⁵²Cf source assembly using MCNP6 Monte Carlo code.
  • Utilization of the ENDF/B-VIII.0 cross-section data library for neutron transport calculations.
  • Calculation of neutron fluence and dose using established conversion coefficients from ICRP report 57.

Main Results:

  • New calculations reveal differences of approximately 5% compared to previous PTB calculations for the neutron spectra and dosimetric parameters.
  • A slight discrepancy was observed when comparing the PTB moderator model results with the ISO 8529 moderator model, particularly for operational quantities.
  • The updated calculations provide a refined understanding of the neutron reference field characteristics.

Conclusions:

  • The updated calculations offer a more accurate characterization of the PTB's D2O moderated ²⁵²Cf neutron reference field.
  • The observed differences highlight the importance of using up-to-date nuclear data and simulation methods for metrology.
  • Further investigation may be needed to resolve discrepancies with the ISO 8529 model for operational quantities.
