Background:

The National Exit Test (NEXT) is a proposed examination for Indian medical graduates, intended as both a licentiate and postgraduate selection test.
Implementation of NEXT has been a subject of long-standing debate in India.
No prior research has investigated stakeholder opinions on the NEXT examination.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the perspectives of medical faculties nationwide regarding the implementation of the National Exit Test (NEXT).

Main Methods:

A nationwide, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based pilot survey was conducted.
A Google survey form with both closed and open-ended questions was distributed via email and WhatsApp.
Data was collected from 245 medical teachers across various specialties and experience levels.

Main Results:

The majority of participating medical faculties viewed the NEXT examination positively.
82.5% of respondents recommended a national selection/testing authority to conduct the exam.
Key suggestions included conducting the test post-internship (36.3%) and incorporating weightage for medical program years (32.7%).
84.1% agreed on assessing all learning domains through diverse strategies.

Conclusions:

Medical faculties generally welcome the National Exit Test (NEXT) when administered by a national testing authority.
NEXT is seen as crucial for establishing uniform standards and quality among Indian medical graduates.
Comprehensive assessment via NEXT is expected to enhance the competence of graduates for employment and residency programs.
