This study compared indocyanine green-based dynamic contrast-enhanced fluorescence imaging (ICG-DCE-FI) and intraoperative MRI (DCE-MRI) for assessing bone blood perfusion. ICG-DCE-FI showed higher sensitivity, while DCE-MRI offered valuable depth information.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Medical Imaging
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Assessing bone blood perfusion is crucial for diagnosing and managing lower extremity bone infections.
- Intraoperative imaging modalities are needed to guide surgical interventions effectively.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between ICG-based dynamic contrast-enhanced fluorescence imaging (DCE-FI) and intraoperative DCE-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for bone perfusion assessment.
- To compare the sensitivity and information provided by these two imaging techniques during orthopedic surgery.
Main Methods:
- Simultaneous ICG-DCE-FI and intraoperative DCE-MRI were performed in three patients with lower extremity bone infections.
- Time-intensity curves were analyzed in corresponding regions of interest for both modalities.
Main Results:
- ICG-DCE-FI demonstrated higher sensitivity to changes in bone blood perfusion.
- DCE-MRI provided superior and complementary information regarding depth-related perfusion.
- The findings suggest a synergistic potential for these imaging techniques.
Conclusions:
- ICG-DCE-FI and DCE-MRI offer distinct yet complementary insights into bone perfusion during orthopedic surgery.
- Further research is exploring the integration of DCE-MRI's depth information to enhance DCE-FI analysis.
- This combined approach holds promise for improved intraoperative assessment of bone infections.
