Reinforcement of student-centered learning through social e-learning and e-assessment
1Faculty of Education, Thamar University, Dhamar, Yemen.
This study developed the PADA module for student-centered learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. The PADA module enhances interactive and social e-learning, with multiple-choice assessments proving most effective.
Area of Science:
- STEM Education
- Educational Technology
Background:
- Student-centered learning is enhanced by internet and electronic devices in interactive, social environments.
- The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical role of interactive and social learning in educational continuity.
- STEM fields present unique challenges for social learning due to course content and mathematical practices.
Purpose of the Study:
- To introduce a new student-centered module for evaluating interactive and social e-learning methods.
- To develop and assess an e-learning module tailored for STEM education within Islamic universities in Indonesia.
- To investigate effective e-assessment strategies for interactive and social learning environments.
Main Methods:
- A mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
- Expert interviews with six STEM professionals to inform module development.
- Evaluation of the developed module by 623 students and educators through workshops.
Main Results:
- The PADA module was successfully developed and implemented in selected Islamic universities.
- The module demonstrated benefits for conducting interactive and social learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Multiple-choice question format was found to be more accurate for e-assessment than true-false or short answer formats.
Conclusions:
- The PADA module offers a beneficial framework for effective student-centered interactive and social e-learning, particularly in STEM.
- The study provides practical insights into e-assessment strategies, favoring multiple-choice questions for accuracy.
- Further instructions for module reuse are provided, promoting wider adoption and adaptation.
