Amifostine, a chemo-radioprotectant, did not prevent acute pericarditis in rats receiving radiotherapy. The study found no protective effect of amifostine against radiation-induced pericardial inflammation.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Oncology
- Radiology
Background:
- Amifostine is a known chemo-radioprotectant.
- Limited data exists on amifostine's role in preventing radiation-induced pericardial damage.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate amifostine's protective effect against acute pericardial injury from radiotherapy in a rat model.
Main Methods:
- Twenty-four rats were divided into control, radiotherapy-only, amifostine-only, and radiotherapy+amifostine groups.
- Radiotherapy involved Co 60 irradiation (20 Gy).
- Amifostine (200 mg/kg) or saline was administered intraperitoneally 30 minutes prior to intervention.
Main Results:
- All rats receiving radiotherapy showed significant pericardial inflammation.
- No significant difference in pericardial inflammatory response was observed between radiotherapy-only and radiotherapy+amifostine groups.
Conclusions:
- Radiotherapy induced acute pericarditis in all exposed rats.
- Amifostine administration did not mitigate acute pericardial inflammation caused by radiotherapy.
