Background:

  • Effort-based postural instructions are common but can impair balance in older adults.
  • Young adults are also susceptible to falls, yet the impact of such instructions on their balance is less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how different postural instructions affect static balance in young adults.
  • To compare the effects of effort-based, light, and relaxed postural instructions on balance.

Main Methods:

  • A within-subjects design with 20 young adults standing on foam.
  • Three conditions: effort-based, light, and relaxed postural instructions, with sway measured by an inertial sensor.
  • Each condition lasted 30 seconds with eyes open.

Main Results:

  • Effort-based postural instructions significantly increased the path length and jerk of postural sway.
  • Balance control was impaired under effort-based instructions compared to light and relaxed conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Thinking of posture as effortful can negatively impact balance in young adults.
  • Current common advice on posture correction using exertion may inadvertently compromise balance and increase fall risk.
