Camera-guided real-time laser ranging for multi-UAV distance measurement.
This study introduces a new laser ranger finder (LRF) system for real-time distance measurement and precise localization of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The prototype system achieves accurate measurements for up to four UAVs simultaneously.
Area of Science:
- Robotics and Automation
- Optical Engineering
- Aerospace Engineering
Background:
- Accurate real-time localization of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is critical for coordinated operations.
- Existing localization methods may face limitations in scalability and precision for dynamic multi-UAV scenarios.
Purpose of the Study:
- To design and implement a scalable prototype system for real-time distance measurement and precise localization of multiple UAVs.
- To integrate a laser ranger finder (LRF) with a camera and fast steering mirror (FSM) for accurate target tracking and rangefinding.
Main Methods:
- A novel system combining a telescope, camera, LRF, and FSM was developed.
- A dichroic mirror was used to align the optical paths of the camera and LRF.
- The FSM dynamically adjusted the LRF's aim based on the UAV's angular position in the camera's field of view.
Main Results:
- The prototype system successfully demonstrated real-time distance measurements for multiple UAVs.
- Accurate distance measurements were achieved for up to four UAVs simultaneously.
- The system operated with a measurement bandwidth of 14 Hz per object.
Conclusions:
- The developed LRF-based system provides a scalable and effective solution for real-time multi-UAV localization.
- The integration of LRF, camera, and FSM enables precise distance measurement and accurate UAV positioning.
- This technology has significant potential for enhancing cooperative UAV missions and aerial robotics.
