Summary

Noise in communication does not force Russian speakers to rely more on word meaning over grammar. This study found no increased semantic reliance under auditory or visual noise conditions.

Background:

Noise degrades linguistic input, impacting language processing.
Noisy-channel and good-enough models predict increased reliance on semantics under noise.
Empirical evidence for these predictions in sentence comprehension is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate if auditory and visual noise increase semantic reliance in Russian sentence comprehension.
To determine if noise leads to superficial sentence processing.
To test predictions of the noisy-channel and good-enough processing models.

Main Methods:

Investigated auditory noise (three-talker babble) and visual noise (idioms).
Assessed Russian sentence comprehension, focusing on semantic vs. syntactic processing.
Measured reading speed using first fixation duration.

Main Results:

Russian speakers generally relied on semantics during sentence comprehension.
Neither auditory nor visual noise significantly increased semantic reliance.
Auditory noise affected reading speed, with plausible sentences read faster than implausible ones only in quiet conditions.

Conclusions:

Findings do not support the noisy-channel and good-enough processing model predictions regarding noise and semantic reliance.
Methodological differences may explain discrepancies with previous studies.
Further research is needed to understand the complex interplay between noise, semantics, and syntax in language processing.
