Background:

  • Electronic health record (EHR) inbox notifications can be a significant burden for primary care providers (PCPs).
  • This burden may contribute to PCP burnout, impacting healthcare quality and provider well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate the association between changes in EHR inbox notification volumes and PCP burnout.
  • To evaluate the impact of an initiative aimed at reducing low-value notifications within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

Main Methods:

  • An observational study design was employed, analyzing data from 6459 PCPs across 138 VHA facilities.
  • Fixed effects regression models assessed the relationship between notification volume changes (increases and decreases) and PCP burnout, using survey data from 2016 and 2018.

Main Results:

  • Daily EHR inbox notifications per PCP decreased by a mean of 5.9% post-initiative.
  • Despite the reduction in notifications at many facilities, no significant association was found between changes in notification volumes and PCP burnout.

Conclusions:

  • Changes in EHR notification volumes alone do not appear to predict PCP burnout.
  • Future interventions to mitigate PCP burnout should incorporate a comprehensive approach, considering various stressors beyond EHR notification management.
