Background:

Rural health professions education (HPE) is crucial for addressing healthcare workforce shortages in rural areas.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) established the Rural Interprofessional Faculty Development Initiative (RIFDI) to support clinician-educators in rural settings.

Purpose of the Study:

To qualitatively evaluate the impact of the RIFDI program on rural HPE.
To assess participants' experiences and perspectives on the RIFDI program's implementation and effectiveness.

Main Methods:

Conducted 27 semi-structured interviews with RIFDI participants.
Employed a rapid analytic approach using template and matrix analysis to analyze interview data.

Main Results:

Participants found RIFDI provided practical support, especially for those in new HPE programs, and valued the interprofessional community of practice.
Experiential projects led to improved rural educational environments, including new faculty development, curriculum, and rotations.
The program fostered a culture of education, increased motivation for rural HPE, and supported trainee recruitment.

Conclusions:

Faculty development programs like RIFDI can significantly enhance rural HPE capacity within national healthcare systems.
Investing in rural clinician-educators cultivates high-quality HPE, which is linked to improved health workforce recruitment and retention.
