Surface superconductivity in CaBC films shows a significant temperature enhancement up to ~90 K, far exceeding the bulk material. This discovery offers new platforms for high-temperature surface superconductivity.
Area of Science:
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Materials Science
- Surface Science
Background:
- Surface superconductivity, proposed by Ginzberg, describes superconductivity confined to a material's surface.
- Bulk CaBC exhibits superconductivity at 8 K, limiting its practical applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the potential for enhanced surface superconductivity in CaBC films.
- To explore the mechanisms behind high-temperature surface superconductivity in these materials.
Main Methods:
- First-principles calculations using density functional theory.
- Analysis of structural, electronic, and vibrational properties of CaBC films.
Main Results:
- Predicted superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) up to ~90 K at the surfaces of CaBC films.
- Identified surface-induced carrier self-doping and σ-bonding state shifts towards the Fermi level.
- Observed softening of in-plane stretching modes in surface layers, enhancing electron-phonon coupling.
Conclusions:
- Surface effects in CaBC films can dramatically increase Tc beyond the McMillan limit.
- These findings highlight CaBC films as promising materials for achieving unusually high-Tc surface superconductivity.
