This study introduces a new o²S²PARC tool for visualizing gene expression data, aiding in the identification of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and their biological roles for genetic disease research.
Area of Science:
- Bioinformatics
- Genomics
- Computational Biology
Background:
- Differential gene expression analysis is crucial for identifying biomarkers and therapeutic targets in genetic diseases.
- Understanding gene functions, biological processes, and cellular components associated with gene expression changes is essential.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop an interactive pipeline for gene expression data visualization, ontological mapping, and statistical evaluation using the o²S²PARC platform.
- To demonstrate the utility of the developed tool through a case study.
Main Methods:
- Development of an o²S²PARC template for an interactive gene expression analysis pipeline.
- Implementation of visualization tools including volcano plots for differentially expressed genes (DEGs).
- Integration of ontological mapping and visualization using barplots.
Main Results:
- The developed tool successfully identifies DEGs and presents them in an interactive volcano plot.
- Associated ontologies for DEGs are assigned and visualized, providing insights into biological context.
- A case study confirmed the tool's effectiveness on a publicly available dataset.
Conclusions:
- The o²S²PARC platform now hosts a user-friendly "Expression data visualization" template.
- This tool facilitates the exploration of gene expression data for genetic disease research.
- The template is publicly accessible, promoting wider adoption and research advancement.

What is Gene Expression?
Gene expression is the process in which DNA directs the synthesis of functional products, that is, proteins. Cells can regulate gene expression at various stages. It allows organisms to generate different cell types and enables cells to adapt to internal and external factors.
Genetic Information Flows from DNA to RNA to Protein
A gene is a stretch of DNA that serves as the blueprint for functional RNAs and proteins. Since DNA is made up of nucleotides and proteins consist of amino...
