Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

12.8K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Correlations02:20

Correlations

33.4K
Correlation means that there is a relationship between two or more variables (such as ice cream consumption and crime), but this relationship does not necessarily imply cause and effect. When two variables are correlated, it simply means that as one variable changes, so does the other. We can measure correlation by calculating a statistic known as a correlation coefficient. A correlation coefficient is a number from -1 to +1 that indicates the strength and direction of the relationship between...

Social Cognitive Perspective on Personality01:30

Social Cognitive Perspective on Personality

601
Social cognitive perspectives on personality emphasize the importance of conscious awareness, beliefs, expectations, and goals in shaping behavior. These perspectives incorporate behaviorist principles, such as learning through reinforcement and conditioning, but extend beyond them by highlighting human reasoning and planning. Unlike traditional behaviorist views, social cognitive theory focuses on how individuals reflect on their past experiences and plan for future outcomes by considering...

Factors affecting Blood pressure01:28

Factors affecting Blood pressure

3.4K
Several physiological and lifestyle factors influence blood pressure (BP). Understanding these factors is crucial as they are significant in patient education and blood pressure management.

Lazarus's Cognitive Appraisal Theory01:20

Lazarus's Cognitive Appraisal Theory

349
Cognitive psychologist Richard Lazarus proposed the cognitive-mediational theory of emotions, which emphasizes how individuals' assessments of stressors significantly affect their experience of stress. According to Lazarus, the stress response is determined by a two-step appraisal process: primary appraisal and secondary appraisal. These cognitive appraisals help individuals evaluate the potential impact of a stressor and determine the adequacy of their coping resources.

Mechanistic Models: Compartment Models in Individual and Population Analysis01:23

Mechanistic Models: Compartment Models in Individual and Population Analysis

69
Mechanistic models are utilized in individual analysis using single-source data, but imperfections arise due to data collection errors, preventing perfect prediction of observed data. The mathematical equation involves known values (Xi), observed concentrations (Ci), measurement errors (εi), model parameters (ϕj), and the related function (ƒi) for i number of values. Different least-squares metrics quantify differences between predicted and observed values. The ordinary least...

Summary

This study explored cognitive and noncognitive factors influencing academic success in prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students. Findings suggest a four-factor noncognitive model best fits academic success, with cognitive and noncognitive factors not significantly correlated.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Higher Education
  • Student Success

Background:

  • Nurse educators face challenges in enhancing student academic success.
  • Limited evidence exists on the impact of cognitive and noncognitive factors on nursing student success.
  • Identifying these factors is crucial for preparing practice-ready graduate nurses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and explore relationships among cognitive and noncognitive factors impacting academic success in prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students.
  • To understand how these factors contribute to student achievement throughout their nursing program.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized an exploratory design with structural equation modeling.
  • Analyzed data from 1,937 baccalaureate nursing (BSN) students across multiple campuses.

Main Results:

  • An initial six-factor cognitive model was conceptualized.
  • A four-factor noncognitive model demonstrated the best fit after excluding two factors.
  • No significant correlation was found between cognitive and noncognitive factors.

Conclusions:

  • This research offers initial insights into cognitive and noncognitive factors associated with academic success in nursing students.
  • The findings may inform strategies to enhance student readiness for professional nursing practice.
