There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Summary

Mobile breathalyzer warnings significantly reduced alcohol-impaired driving (AID) by increasing perceived danger and decreasing willingness to drive. This technology offers a promising intervention for preventing impaired driving.

  • Prevalence of AID necessitates innovative intervention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of mobile device-delivered, breathalyzer-cued warning messages in reducing AID.
  • To assess the impact of these warnings on real-world driving cognitions and behaviors.

Main Methods:

  • 120 young adults participated in a 6-week ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study.
  • Participants used a mobile-linked breathalyzer, providing breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) samples.
  • Randomized assignment to receive warnings at BrAC ≥ .05 or no warnings.

Main Results:

  • Warning messages significantly dampened the association between AID engagement and reaching a .05 BrAC.
  • Participants receiving warnings reported increased perceived danger of driving.
  • Willingness to drive after drinking was decreased in the warnings group.

Conclusions:

  • BrAC-cued warnings effectively reduced the probability of AID and willingness to drive impaired.
  • The intervention increased the perceived danger associated with driving after drinking.
  • Mobile technology can deliver adaptive, just-in-time interventions to mitigate AID.
