Summary

Optic disc pit maculopathy (ODPM) was successfully treated using a novel inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap technique. This surgical approach offers favorable anatomical and visual acuity improvements for patients with ODPM.

Background:

  • Optic disc pit maculopathy (ODPM) is a rare condition affecting the macula.
  • Current management strategies for ODPM have varying success rates.

Observation:

  • A prospective interventional case series involving three adult patients with unilateral ODPM was conducted.
  • All patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy with posterior vitreous detachment induction.
  • An inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap was created and placed over the optic disc, followed by gas tamponade.

Findings:

  • Significant improvements in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were observed post-surgery.
  • One patient's BCVA improved from 2/200 to 20/25, while others improved by two to three lines.
  • All three eyes demonstrated substantial anatomical recovery with no reported complications.

Implications:

  • Vitrectomy combined with an inverted ILM flap is a safe and effective surgical option for ODPM.
  • This technique shows promise for achieving favorable anatomical and visual outcomes in ODPM patients.
