Summary

Head positioning after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) was assessed using a new 3-D sensor. Adherence to face-down positioning was low, especially during sleep, indicating challenges in maintaining optimal head posture post-surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a common surgical procedure.
  • Maintaining specific head positions post-surgery is crucial for optimal outcomes.
  • Current methods for monitoring head position are often intrusive or lack precision.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate head position adherence following pars plana vitrectomy (PPV).
  • To assess the efficacy of a novel, low-energy, non-intrusive 3-D position sensor platform for monitoring head position.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, non-randomized interventional case series was conducted.
  • A novel eye shield with an integrated low-energy Bluetooth smart sensor recorded 3-D positional data.
  • Data was collected post-PPV, with readings analyzed by vector analysis into four positional deviation groups.

Main Results:

  • Ten patients were enrolled, with 2318 positional readings obtained.
  • Positional deviation from a completely prone head position was analyzed.
  • A majority of readings fell into moderate deviation groups (2 and 3), with significantly increased deviation during sleep compared to wake times (p<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • The wireless 3-D position sensor-shield platform was well-tolerated and effective in capturing positional data.
  • Adherence to prescribed face-down positioning after PPV was found to be low.
  • Positional deviation increased significantly during sleep, highlighting a challenge in post-operative care.
