Imaging Biological Samples with Optical Microscopy

4.9K
Optical microscopy uses optic principles to provide detailed images of samples. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek designed the first compound optical microscope in the 17th century to visualize blood cells, bacteria, and yeast cells. In 1830, Joseph Jackson Lister created an essentially modern light microscope. The 20th century saw the development of microscopes with enhanced magnification and resolution.
In optical microscopy, the specimen to be viewed is placed on a glass slide and clipped on the stage...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Optical Imaging

Background:

  • Phototherapy, including photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT), offers non-invasive cancer treatment by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) or heat.
  • Traditional phototherapy lacks real-time imaging, hindering process monitoring and potentially causing severe side effects from excessive ROS or hyperthermia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review advances in self-reporting phototherapeutic agents for real-time evaluation of cancer phototherapy.
  • To highlight the integration of optical imaging with phototherapy for precise cancer treatment and reduced toxicity.

Main Methods:

  • Review of recent developments in self-reporting phototherapeutic agents.
  • Analysis of how optical imaging technologies are combined with PDT and PTT.
  • Focus on agents enabling real-time monitoring of therapeutic responses and tumor microenvironment changes.

Main Results:

  • Development of self-reporting phototherapeutic agents allows for real-time monitoring of PDT and PTT.
  • Optical imaging provides timely feedback on therapeutic efficacy and tumor microenvironment dynamics.
  • These agents facilitate personalized precision treatment and minimize adverse effects.

Conclusions:

  • Self-reporting phototherapeutic agents are crucial for advancing precision cancer treatment.
  • Real-time optical imaging feedback enables optimized phototherapy strategies.
  • Future research should address challenges and explore new directions for self-reporting agents in precision medicine.
