Summary
We developed a novel neodymium (Nd³⁺)-doped phosphate glass microsphere laser. This laser achieves a record high quality (Q) factor of 1.54 × 10⁶, significantly improving performance over existing non-silica microsphere lasers.
Area of Science:
- Optics and Photonics
- Materials Science
- Laser Physics
Background:
- Neodymium (Nd³⁺)-doped glasses are crucial laser gain media.
- Non-silica Nd³⁺ microsphere lasers suffer from low quality (Q) factors due to impurities causing non-radiative energy loss.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a high-Q factor Nd³⁺-doped non-silica microsphere laser.
- To investigate the lasing properties of Nd³⁺-doped phosphate glass microspheres.
Main Methods:
- Fabrication of Nd³⁺-doped phosphate glass microspheres.
- Characterization of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in the 1020-1120 nm band.
- Analysis of lasing performance under 808-nm laser diode pumping.
Main Results:
- Achieved the highest Q-factor of 1.54 × 10⁶ for Nd³⁺-doped non-silica glass microsphere lasers.
- Demonstrated microsphere lasing with low pump threshold (0.17 mW).
- Observed single- and multi-mode lasing from microspheres with a diameter of 82.57 µm.
Conclusions:
- Nd³⁺-doped phosphate glass microspheres offer superior Q-factors, at least an order of magnitude higher than other non-silica systems.
- These microspheres represent promising active optical/photonic devices with low threshold operation.
