A transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement successfully treated severe tricuspid regurgitation in a patient with a pacemaker and cardiac resynchronization therapy. This minimally invasive approach offered a solution for complex right heart failure.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Interventional Cardiology
- Cardiac Surgery
Background:
- A 79-year-old female patient with a history of dilated cardiomyopathy and a permanent pacemaker underwent upgrade to an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT-D).
- The patient presented with symptoms indicative of right heart failure, necessitating further investigation.
Observation:
- Echocardiography revealed torrential tricuspid regurgitation, a severe form of valve leakage.
- Two existing leads were noted to be crossing the tricuspid valve, complicating the clinical picture.
Findings:
- A multidisciplinary team evaluated the patient's complex cardiac condition.
- A dedicated transcatheter valve replacement procedure was successfully performed to address the tricuspid regurgitation.
Implications:
- Transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement is a viable option for managing severe tricuspid regurgitation in patients with complex cardiac devices.
- This minimally invasive approach can effectively treat right heart failure secondary to severe tricuspid regurgitation, potentially improving patient outcomes.
