  • 148 healthy women aged 46-55 were divided into two groups (46-50 and 51-55 years).
  • Thyroid profile tests including TSH, total T3, and total T4 were performed.
  • Prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and overt hypothyroidism (OH) was assessed.

Main Results:

  • 14.9% of women had SCH and 5.4% had OH.
  • Hypothyroidism prevalence increased with age, with Group II (51-55 years) showing higher rates of OH.
  • TSH levels were significantly higher in Group II compared to Group I (P=0.002).

Conclusions:

  • Screening perimenopausal women for thyroid disorders ensures early detection and management.
  • Timely intervention can reduce morbidity and associated complications.
  • Thyroid dysfunction prevalence increases with age during the perimenopausal transition.
