Summary

Nonoperative management for acute Achilles tendon rupture yields similar patient-reported outcomes to surgery at one year. However, nonoperative treatment presents a higher risk of tendon rerupture.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Sports medicine
  • Musculoskeletal research

Background:

  • Acute Achilles tendon rupture is a common injury in athletes and active individuals.
  • Treatment options include operative (surgical) and nonoperative (conservative) management.
  • The choice of treatment impacts functional recovery and re-injury risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare patient-reported outcomes at one year between operative and nonoperative management of acute Achilles tendon ruptures.
  • To assess the re-rupture rates associated with each management strategy.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study design was employed.
  • Patient-reported outcome measures were collected at the one-year follow-up point.
  • Rerupture events were systematically recorded for both treatment groups.

Main Results:

  • Patient-reported outcomes were comparable between the surgical and nonoperative groups at the one-year mark.
  • The nonoperative management group experienced a statistically significant higher rate of Achilles tendon rerupture compared to the surgical group.

Conclusions:

  • Nonoperative management offers similar functional recovery to surgery for acute Achilles tendon ruptures at one year.
  • The increased risk of rerupture necessitates careful consideration when opting for nonoperative treatment.
