Oxygen utilisation in patients on prolonged parenteral nutrition; a case-controlled study

Patients with intestinal failure (IF) on parenteral nutrition (PN) show normal oxygen utilization despite fatigue. This suggests that fatigue in IF patients on PN may stem from causes other than suboptimal oxidative metabolism. Further research is needed to explore these alternative causes.

- No significant differences were observed in VO2 peak, AT, or VE/VCO2 between IF patients and controls.

- Apparently well-nourished IF patients on PN exhibit normal oxygen utilization.
- Fatigue in this patient group likely arises from causes other than suboptimal oxidative metabolism.
- Further studies are needed to determine CPET's utility in assessing perioperative risk for IF patients on PN.
