A nationally validated curriculum for anaesthesiology postgraduate training was developed using Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs). This competency-based approach achieved high consensus among German anaesthesiology leaders, establishing a framework for future training.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Anaesthesiology Training
- Competency-Based Education
Background:
- Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) are crucial for competency-based medical education.
- Transforming time-based training requires consensus on core EPAs.
- A validated EPA-based curriculum is needed for anaesthesiology postgraduate training.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present a nationally validated EPA-based curriculum for anaesthesiology postgraduate training.
- To achieve consensus on core EPAs among German anaesthesiology chair directors.
Main Methods:
- A Delphi consensus approach involving German anaesthesiology chair directors.
- Utilized a predefined and validated list of EPAs.
- Conducted a subsequent qualitative analysis for curriculum adaptation.
Main Results:
- High levels of agreement were reached on the importance and entrustment year of EPAs (ICC > 0.78).
- Excellent and good agreement was observed between validation and present study data (ICC > 0.67).
- A final set of 34 EPAs was established through an adaptation process.
Conclusions:
- An elaborate, nationally validated EPA-based curriculum for anaesthesiology postgraduate training was developed.
- The curriculum reflects broad consensus among anaesthesiology stakeholders.
- This represents a significant step towards competency-based postgraduate anaesthesiology training.
