Background:

Live captioning is crucial for accessibility but its cognitive demands are understudied.
Captioners face intense concentration requirements for real-time audio-to-text conversion.

Purpose of the Study:

To measure the subjective mental workload of live captioners using the NASA-TLX.
To identify factors contributing to the mental workload experienced by live captioners.

Main Methods:

Thirty live captioners participated in the study.
Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews, utilizing the NASA-TLX workload scale.

Main Results:

Live captioners report high subjective mental workload, similar to neurosurgeons.
Mental workload is significantly associated with caption paraphrasing and employment status.
Key contributing factors include speaking speed, paraphrasing complexity, performance anxiety, audience impact, and scheduling control.

Conclusions:

Current live captioning demands necessitate improved worker scheduling, longer breaks, and team-based work.
Future workflows should explore AI-assisted captioning, shifting captioners to roles managing AI systems.
Implementing these changes can enhance captioner well-being and improve overall captioning quality and accessibility.
