Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and analyze outcome reporting in recent interventional studies for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
  • To identify heterogeneity and gaps in outcome measurement within NEC therapeutic research.

  • Systematic review of interventional NEC studies published between January 2016 and June 2023.
  • Inclusion of clinical trials and change-in-practice cohort studies for NEC patients (Bell's stage ≥ IIa).
  • Exclusion of diagnostic/preventive studies and non-English publications; outcomes categorized and descriptively analyzed.

  • Fifteen studies were included, reporting a median of six unique outcomes (range 1-19).
  • Sixty-six unique outcomes were identified, with 64% reported in only one study.
  • Mortality was the most frequent outcome (73%), while 'Life impact' outcomes were least common (20% of studies).

Conclusions:

  • Significant heterogeneity exists in outcome reporting for interventional NEC studies.
  • There is a notable lack of outcomes related to 'Life impact' in current NEC research.
  • Establishing a NEC core outcome set is recommended to enhance consistency and patient relevance.
