Rheumatoid arthritis patients overwhelmingly prefer oral medications over injections. Ease of administration is key, though adherence challenges exist for oral rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatments.
Area of Science:
- Rheumatology
- Patient-reported outcomes
- Pharmacotherapy
Background:
- Limited understanding of patient preferences for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment modalities.
- Need to identify preferred routes of administration among RA patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- Determine the most favored therapy mode (oral, subcutaneous, intravenous) for RA patients.
- Understand the rationale behind patient choices for RA treatment routes.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional, nationwide qualitative study involving 308 RA patients.
- Interviews assessed preferred therapy mode and reasons for choice.
- A 10-point allocation system evaluated determining factors for therapy preference.
Main Results:
- Oral route was the most preferred RA treatment (73.3%), followed by subcutaneous injection (19.5%) and IV infusion (7.3%).
- Ease of drug administration was the primary reason for preferring oral therapy (63.2%).
- Difficulty with adherence and swallowing pills were key concerns for avoiding oral RA treatments.
Conclusions:
- The oral route is the most preferred RA treatment modality in this cohort.
- Shared decision-making between patients and physicians is crucial for RA management.
- Patient preferences significantly influence the choice of RA therapy administration route.
