Zeolite templating enables selective synthesis of N-doped carbon materials rich in edge sites. This method significantly enhances oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalytic activity by increasing active sites and improving their quality.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Electrochemistry
- Catalysis
Background:
- Nitrogen-doped carbon materials are functional due to lattice distortion and defects introduced by nitrogen doping.
- Specific nitrogen configurations (pyridinic-N, pyrrolic-N, valley-N) at edge sites are crucial for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis.
- Selective synthesis of these edge-site nitrogen configurations is challenging due to high-temperature requirements.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a method for selectively synthesizing edge site-rich N-doped carbon materials.
- To investigate the impact of a zeolite templating method on the ORR catalytic performance of N-doped carbons.
Main Methods:
- Application of a zeolite templating method for synthesizing N-doped carbon materials.
- Characterization of nitrogen configurations and active sites in the synthesized materials.
- Evaluation of electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).
Main Results:
- The zeolite templated sample showed high concentrations of pyridinic-N and valley-N at edge sites.
- Zeolite templating significantly enhanced the ORR catalytic activity compared to non-templated samples.
- The method increased specific surface area, active sites, and improved the quality of active sites.
Conclusions:
- Zeolite templating is an effective strategy for selectively creating edge sites in N-doped carbon materials.
- The synthesized materials exhibit superior ORR electrocatalytic performance.
- This approach offers a promising route for designing advanced electrocatalysts.
