Psychosis: Goals of Pharmacotherapy

165
Antipsychotic drugs are a crucial treatment method for acute and chronic psychoses, bipolar illness, and behavioral disorders. The selection of these drugs depends on several factors, including the state of the disease, clinical judgment, possible drug interactions, and the patient's sensitivity to adverse effects. In immediate scenarios, such as delirium and dementia, short-term treatment with low doses of high-potency typical or atypical agents can effectively manage symptom exacerbation.

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacy Education
  • Mental Health Training
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Mental health issues are prevalent among diverse populations.
  • Healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, require training to address mental health concerns effectively.
  • Stigma surrounding mental illness can hinder individuals from seeking help.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To implement and evaluate Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training within a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.
  • To assess the impact of MHFA training on student pharmacists' perceptions of mental illness stigma.
  • To measure changes in student pharmacists' comfort, confidence, and willingness to intervene in mental health crises.

Main Methods:

  • An all-day MHFA training was integrated as a mandatory component of the PharmD curriculum.
  • Pre- and post-training surveys were administered to assess changes in student perceptions.
  • Validated scales (Opening Minds to Stigma Scale) and custom questions were used to evaluate stigma, confidence, and willingness to intervene.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant reduction in stigma was observed for 9 out of 15 statements on the stigma scale.
  • Student pharmacists demonstrated significant improvements in comfort and willingness to provide care after the training.
  • Confidence levels in addressing mental health issues also significantly increased post-MHFA training.

Conclusions:

  • Mandatory MHFA training in a PharmD program effectively reduces mental illness stigma among student pharmacists.
  • The training enhances student pharmacists' confidence, comfort, and readiness to support individuals experiencing mental health challenges.
  • Integrating MHFA into pharmacy curricula is a viable strategy to improve mental health literacy and intervention skills in future pharmacists.
