Inflammatory Bowel Disease IV: Pharmacological Management01:29

Inflammatory Bowel Disease IV: Pharmacological Management

152
Upon diagnosis, managing Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) involves addressing several crucial aspects. The primary goals include resting the bowel, correcting malnutrition, and providing symptomatic relief. Resting the bowel may consist of medications to reduce inflammation and promote healing. Correcting malnutrition is essential, often requiring dietary adjustments and nutritional supplements. Symptomatic relief aims to ease pain, diarrhea, and other discomforts in IBD.

Chronic Kidney Disease IV: Nursing Management

25
Nursing management is essential for preventing complications, maintaining stability, and improving patients' quality of life in chronic kidney disease (CKD). By using a structured approach, nurses help slow CKD progression and support effective patient care.1. Comprehensive patient assessmentEffective management begins with nurses reviewing the patient’s medical history, and identifying key risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, and nephrotoxic drug use. Nurses assess signs of...

Chronic Kidney Disease III: Interprofessional Care

42
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) requires collaborative and comprehensive management. CKD progresses through stages and can lead to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) if untreated. Interprofessional collaboration and patient education are crucial, enabling patients to manage their health and improve their quality of life.Diagnostic approach for chronic kidney diseaseThe diagnosis of CKD primarily focuses on the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which assesses kidney function by measuring how well...

Atherosclerosis III: Management

12
Management of atherosclerosis involves an integrated strategy encompassing pharmacological treatment, surgical interventions, lifestyle changes, and nutrition therapy to address the multifactorial nature of the disease.Pharmacological TherapyA cornerstone of atherosclerosis management is the use of pharmacological agents. Statins, such as atorvastatin, are pivotal in inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that catalyzes an initial step in cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This reduction in...

Cystic Fibrosis: Management

194
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disorder that predominantly affects individuals of Northern European descent, occurring at a rate of 1 in 3500. It is caused by a genetic mutation in a gene on chromosome 7, most commonly the ΔF508 mutation, that codes for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. This results in thicker mucus secretions and obstruction pathologies in multiple organs, including the lungs and sinuses.
Sinus disease and chronic...

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Diseases
  • Medical Case Reports

Background:

  • Acute retinal pigment epitheliitis (ARPE), also known as Krill's disease, is a self-limiting retinal condition.
  • Currently, there is no specific established treatment for ARPE.

Observation:

  • A young female presented with a few days history of scotoma in her right eye.
  • Clinical examination and imaging were consistent with a diagnosis of ARPE.
  • The patient was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP).

Findings:

  • Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) revealed a reduction in lesion hyperreflectivity and height by day 3 post-IVMP.
  • Near-total resolution of the ARPE lesion was observed by day 5 post-IVMP.

Implications:

  • This case suggests that IVMP may be an effective treatment for rapidly resolving ARPE.
  • Further studies are warranted to confirm the efficacy of IVMP in ARPE management.
