    Summary

    Force modulating tissue bridges (FMTBs) significantly reduce wound complications after breast surgery. This safe and effective device offloads tension, improving healing and reducing the risk of dehiscence and poor scarring.

    Background:

    • Wound tension increases risks of dehiscence and poor scarring.
    • Force modulating tissue bridges (FMTBs) are novel devices to offload wound tension.
    • FMTBs aim to improve wound healing and scar outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of FMTBs in reducing wound complications.
    • To assess FMTBs in elective breast surgery patients.

    Main Methods:

    • 122 patients received intraoperative FMTB placement on vertical limb closure.
    • A matched case-control cohort of 121 patients was used for comparison.
    • Primary outcome: significant wounds (>3 mm diameter); secondary outcomes: number needed to treat.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences in demographics or surgical factors between groups.
    • Significant wounds occurred in 1.7% of FMTB patients vs. 15.2% of controls (89% reduction, P < .001).
    • No complications were reported with FMTB use; results robust in sensitivity analyses.

    Conclusions:

    • FMTBs are safe and highly effective in reducing wound complications in elective breast surgery.
    • The device successfully offloads tension, leading to improved wound healing.
    • Further studies will investigate long-term scar quality.
