Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Arts in Medicine
  • Collaborative Practice

Background:

  • Interprofessional education (IPE) requires innovative curricula for diverse learners.
  • Existing IPE frameworks often lack arts and humanities integration.
  • Visual arts offer unique potential for developing collaborative competencies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop, implement, and evaluate a visual arts-based IPE session.
  • To assess the impact of visual arts on interprofessional collaborative competencies.
  • To explore the feasibility of integrating arts into IPE.

Main Methods:

  • A 90-minute visual arts session using Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS).
  • Learners observed art, discussed observations, and connected them to professional identities and practice.
  • Facilitated small group discussions explored themes of collaboration and bias.

Main Results:

  • 80% of learners found the art observation activity effective for interprofessional team discussions.
  • Significant increases in Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey scores (pre: 45.73, post: 51.46).
  • Qualitative themes included open-mindedness, diverse perspectives, teamwork, and patient-centeredness.

Conclusions:

  • Integrating visual arts into IPE is feasible and beneficial.
  • Arts-based pedagogies effectively enhance collaborative competencies in diverse healthcare learners.
  • This approach fosters essential skills for interprofessional collaborative practice.
